The Week 3 prize bag sponsored by Sennebogen and LEDA has officially been claimed at Rock Springs Elementary School! Congratulations to our winner for solving the clues and tracking down this week's hidden prize.
Now for the history behind the hunt...
Did you know Rock Springs Elementary traces its roots back more than 150 years?
Before Denver was Denver, it was known as Dry Pond. In the 1870s, two branch lines of the Seaboard Railroad crossed there, creating a boom in business, growth, and opportunity. As the community expanded, residents decided "Dry Pond" deserved a more ambitious name and renamed the area Denver.
One of the community's most significant investments was Rock Springs Seminary, a two-story academy built in 1873. Under the leadership of educator D. Matt Thompson, the school attracted students from across the region and quickly became a center of learning for eastern Lincoln County.
In 1923, Rock Springs Seminary became Rock Springs High School following the passage of a county bond that expanded educational opportunities for local children.
By 1925, the school had earned state accreditation and would go on to produce graduates who served in leadership roles across North Carolina and beyond.
Over the next century, the campus evolved alongside the rapidly growing Denver community. The school added classrooms, a gymnasium, satellite campuses, and new facilities as enrollment surged. After a devastating fire destroyed a classroom building in 1994, plans for a new school accelerated, leading to the opening of the current Rock Springs Elementary facility in 1996. Another expansion followed in 2009 to accommodate continued growth.
Through every chapter of its history—from seminary to high school to elementary school—Rock Springs has remained at the center of the Denver community. In many ways, the story of Rock Springs is the story of Denver itself.
Current Information for Rock Springs Elementary:
Enrollment: 650
Principal: Mr. Brian Palmer

While students enjoy a well-earned summer break, the work of leading Lincoln County Schools continues year-round.
As part of our Still Serving summer series, we're highlighting the dedicated employees who continue working behind the scenes to prepare for another successful school year. Today, we're featuring Superintendent Dr. Aaron Allen.
Ask Dr. Allen to describe his job in one sentence, and his answer is simple: "Leading those that impact the future of our community."
While many people think summer is a slower season for schools, it's actually one of the most important times of the year for district leadership. Dr. Allen spends the summer months focused on strategic planning, preparing for the upcoming school year, keeping school leaders and the Board of Education informed, and closing out one school year while opening another.
The summer months also provide something that's often hard to find during the school year—uninterrupted time to think, plan, and evaluate.
"Summer offers more opportunity for strategic planning and evaluating our progress toward school and district goals with minimal distractions," Dr. Allen said.
For Dr. Allen, the most rewarding part of the job is building connections that create opportunities for students and families.
"I get to lead educational leaders and connect the best of Lincoln County's industry, government, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and businesses to our schools in order to provide support, open doors of possibilities for students, and change family outcomes for the better."
And if you ask him about his work, don't be surprised if his enthusiasm shines through.
#ILoveMyJob — ask me about it!
While school may be out, Dr. Allen is still serving—working alongside our staff, Board of Education, and community partners to ensure Lincoln County Schools is ready for another year of success.

When students leave for summer break, Lincoln County Schools' buses don't get a vacation.
As part of our Still Serving summer series, we're highlighting the employees who continue working behind the scenes to prepare for another successful school year. Today, we're featuring the dedicated team in our Transportation Department.
On the last day of school, every bus not assigned to a summer school route is brought back to the transportation facility. Once summer school concludes, the remaining buses join them.
From there, the work begins.
Throughout the summer, transportation technicians complete preventative maintenance, run diagnostics, and conduct required 30-day inspections on every yellow and white bus in the fleet. Their work helps ensure each vehicle is safe, reliable, and ready to transport students when school resumes in August.
At the same time, a seasonal crew of 8–10 employees takes on the massive task of deep cleaning every bus. Using hot-water pressure washers and specialized degreasing solutions, they wash exteriors, then move inside to detail each vehicle from front to back.
Every bus is vacuumed. Every seat and window is cleaned. Interior roof trim moldings are scrubbed, and handrails are sanitized to help provide a clean, welcoming environment for students.
With more than 100 buses in the Lincoln County Schools fleet, preparing for a new school year takes weeks of hard work and attention to detail.
While school may be out, our Transportation Department is still serving—making sure thousands of students have a safe, clean ride on the first day back.

Building on yesterday’s goal-setting work, school administrators and teacher leaders focused on how to bring our district’s Strategic Plan to life within their schools. Teams engaged in discussions around shared understandings, strengthening Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and creating effective communication systems that support students, staff, and families.
When leaders come together to learn, collaborate, and align their efforts, the result is a stronger foundation for success in every classroom. We appreciate the dedication of our leadership teams as they invest in the work that will impact students across Lincoln County Schools in the year ahead.
#WeAreLINCOLN #LCSLeads

Teams of administrators and teacher leaders spent the day identifying academic, cultural, and leadership goals for the year ahead, developing lead measures, and creating action steps to turn vision into reality. Through collaboration, reflection, and strategic planning, each team focused on what it will take to support student success and strengthen their school communities.
The work that happens during the summer lays the foundation for the year ahead, and we are excited to see the goals, ideas, and plans that will shape learning across Lincoln County Schools in 2026-2027.

Congratulations to our winner for solving the clues and finding this week's hidden prize (we didn't get a photo but the school said it had been found).
Now for the history behind the location...
The community of Iron Station got its name from the iron mining industry and railroad activity that helped shape this area of Lincoln County during the 19th century. Long before it became a quiet rural community, Iron Station was a hub of industry, transportation, and growth.
Like many communities across Lincoln County, education in the area began in small local schools that served nearby families. Over time, countywide efforts to consolidate schools created the modern educational system we know today. Those efforts brought students together into larger, graded schools designed to provide expanded opportunities and resources for all children.
Today's Iron Station Elementary School continues that tradition of serving as a community cornerstone. The school educates approximately 360 students in grades Pre-K through 5 and has built strong partnerships to support both learning and student well-being. Through collaborations with organizations such as Kintegra Health and the YMCA, students have access to additional health, literacy, and enrichment opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.
While the trains and iron mines may be long gone, the spirit of community remains strong. More than a school building, Iron Station Elementary serves as a gathering place where students learn, families connect, and traditions continue from one generation to the next.
And unlike the original residents of Iron Station, today's scavenger hunters only had to search for a prize bag—not a railroad or an iron mine.
Current Information for Iron Station Elementary:
Enrollment: 360
Principal: Mrs. Anna Gilbert
