A lively Hispanic Heritage Month parade moving down a cobblestone street decorated with colorful papel picado banners and international flags. In the center, a parade float displays banners reading "National Hispanic Heritage Month" and "Mes de la Herencia Hispana," with performers in traditional folkloric dress and Puerto Rican flag attire. On the street, spectators wave flags, musicians play guitars, and two people carry a banner reading "Mes de la Herencia Hispana." A sign over the street reads "Fiesta de la Heritage Hispana."

National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Why September 15?
The date is significant because several Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua—celebrate their independence on September 15. Mexico’s Independence Day is September 16, and Chile’s is September 18.
