🍂 Big Buddies, Big Imagination! 🍂

After reading Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert, Mrs. O'Donnell's 4th grade class paired up with their 1st grade buddies from Mrs. Kraushaar's class, for a fall-themed creative project! Using vibrant leaves, twigs, and acorn caps gathered from outside, the students collaborated to bring their very own Leaf Men to life.

It was wonderful to see our older students step up as mentors—helping their younger partners arrange designs, share materials, and talk through their ideas.

🚨 Sound the alarm for a fun day of learning! 🚨

Our Kindergarten and 2nd grade students had some very special guests today! The awesome team from the Denver Fire Department visited to teach our students all about fire safety. From learning how to get out of your home safely to touring a real fire truck, our students had a blast learning how to stay safe. 🚒🔥

A huge thank you to our local heroes for taking the time to educate and inspire our next generation! ❤️

Today is National Custodial Worker Recognition Day, and we want to give a massive shoutout to the absolute best team around: Lisa, Deb, and Brandon ! 🧹✨

Every single day, before many of us even arrive and long after we leave, they are working hard behind the scenes to keep Rock Springs Elementary School safe, clean, and welcoming for everyone. From fixing quick messes to making our spaces shine, their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

When students arrive late or miss school, they aren't just missing minutes—they're missing direct instruction, classroom discussions, practice, routines, and opportunities to build on what they learned the day before.

Our own data showed just how quickly those minutes can add up. During one week alone, 42 tardies resulted in approximately 1,050 minutes of lost instructional time. That's learning time our students can't get back!

We also saw an important trend at our school: students with stronger attendance also demonstrated stronger academic outcomes. When students were present from bell to bell, they had greater access to the instruction and learning opportunities they needed to be successful.

Attendance isn't just about being marked “present.” Attendance is an academic issue.

Thank you to our Sailor families for helping us make such incredible progress last year. A 25.8% decrease in absences and a 19.2% decrease in tardies happened because our families, students, teachers, and staff worked together.

As Attendance Awareness Month comes to an end, our commitment doesn't:

⚓ Be here. Be on time. Be ready to learn.
Because every day, every class, and every minute matters.

Starting in October, we will kick off our school-wide attendance improvement plan to have 95% of our students IN CLASS from the first bell to the last bell! Grade levels will earn points for meeting our goal of 95% attendance for the entire week. The first grade level to reach 100 points will earn an ice cream party!!

Happy Retirement to our incredible Financial Secretary, Carla Gillespie!

For years, Carla has been the heartbeat behind the scenes at Rock Springs -- keeping out budgets balanced, supporting our staff, and welcoming everyone into the front office with warmth and a smiling face.

While we will miss Carla's amazing dedication and kindness around the halls, we couldn't be happier as she steps into this well-deserved new chapter.

Did you know? When looking at chronic absenteeism, all missed school days count—excused and unexcused.

Sometimes absences are unavoidable, but every day in school provides valuable instructional time that can't be fully replaced. When students are healthy and able to attend, we want them here!
