Mrs. Holland's Math 3 students recently took geometry concepts out of the textbook and into the open sky. During a hands-on learning project, the class applied their understanding of quadrilaterals, geometric proofs, and mathematical properties to design and build their very own functional kites.

The lesson began inside the classroom, where students worked directly with Mrs. Holland to calculate dimensions, measure angles, and plan out symmetrical structures. Working at their desks with rulers, markers, laptops, and specialized craft materials, students drafted their designs and calculated the required proportions to ensure proper balance and lift. Each student customized their kite frame, carefully mapping out diagonal lines, vertex angles, and side lengths while decorating the sail panels with custom artwork and bright patterns.

Once the construction phase was complete, the class headed outdoors to test their creations. Under clear blue skies on the school grounds, students put their mathematical calculations to the real test. Taking turns on the open grass field and basketball court, they launched their homemade kites into the air.

With assistance from school staff, school volunteers, and the school resource officer, the trial runs proved to be a success as students watched their geometric designs catch the wind and take flight. The hands-on activity allowed the Math 3 class to see how abstract principles of geometry directly translate into real-world aerodynamics and engineering.
