Lincoln County Schools – Inclement Weather Procedures
Weather Delays and Cancellations
Making the decision to delay school, dismiss early or cancel school for the day is a difficult one that involves a great deal of behind-the-scenes work. LCS officials consult with weather and emergency management experts and other school districts and have employees ride the roads to determine whether it is safe for staff, parents and buses to travel. This is no small undertaking, as Lincoln County covers 316 square miles and has hundreds of secondary roads with varying degrees of icy accumulation due to either lack of weather treatment by the Department of Transportation, lack of travel or varying weather conditions in different parts of the county.
Weather Notification Procedures
All inclement weather closing announcements will be immediately posted on the LCS website homepage and Facebook page. At the same time, LCS faculty, staff, and parents will be informed through BlackBoard while simultaneous notifications are given to the news media, social media platforms, and our LCS App.
Two-hour Delay
Sometimes the decision is made to delay schools, usually for two hours (sometimes three hours). This simply means that the school day will begin exactly two (three) hours later than normal. This does not, however, extend the school day, and students are released at the same times as the normal school day. If certified staff feel that their personal safety is not at risk, and they are able to safely come to work earlier than the delay, their earlier arrival will assist in monitoring students. Otherwise, certified staff should report at the time specified by the delay. The exception is only for employees deemed as essential personnel by their supervisor.
Parents Have an Important Role
In order to be notified, it is essential that parents keep emergency contact information updated at their child’s school. This information includes home and emergency phone numbers. Your family cannot be notified if current telephone numbers are not known.
