Entomology & BugFest 2018

  • So...here is how a trip to BugFest came about!

I was looking at Donors Choose for project inspiration and started with corporate match offers (teacher raises X money and a company matches at various levels).  I saw that Orkin was offering match to teachers with projects to teach students about entomology or insects.  I knew there was not any entomology or insect connection in my eighth grade curriculum, so I started exploring ideas for GEMS connections.

First I discovered the Entomology Department at NC State!  So, I started researching entomology as a career and how important it is for so many industries!  The military, agriculture, epidemiology, pest control, forensics, OH MY!  Then, down the internet rabbit hole I traveled looking for lesson ideas and I stumbled across NC Museum of Natural Sciences BugFest!  Eureka, my Donors Choose project idea appeared!  The project was funded by local donors, an anonymous donor in MA, matched by Orkin!

At our first September meeting on 9/11, after some rules and get-to-know you stuff, students will craft thank you cards for the Donors Choose donors.  On Saturday, September 15, we will take a coach bus to Raleigh to the Museum of Natural Sciences to learn, hold, and maybe...taste, BUGS!

At our follow-up September meeting we will finish thank you's and have a Skype session with Bug Chick:  Kristie Reddick
