Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends;
On Friday, October 28th, Asbury Academy students will celebrate the conclusion of a school-wide novel study with a daylong celebration, Hatchet-ween. Hatchet is the title of the novel series our students have been reading for the last several weeks.
On Hatchet-ween, students will have the opportunity to participate in numerous activities, including instructional, hands-on sessions about survival skills, nature, and outdoor recreation. They also will have breakfast and lunch feasts after regular school-provided meals, featuring items donated by local restaurants including Bojangles, McDonalds, Fatz, Zaxby’s, Wendy’s and Pizza Hut. Students will have the opportunity – if they choose – to sample edible (commercially processed and purchased) insects and rattlesnake meat.
The movie-version of Hatchet will be shown. Students will have the opportunity to take a hike in the woods behind the school, to complete an obstacle course and to dress like a character from the novel series and participate in a costume contest. Awards will be given for the three best costumes. Costumes must pertain to the novel series and adhere to the school dress code. No masks and no weapons, either real or fake, may be worn/brought to school.
Students also, weather-permitting, may participate in a hike through the woods on Asbury’s campus. If they plan to participate, students should wear jeans, closed-toed shoes (sneakers or boots) and a hat. Insect-repellant will be offered. Students who do not wear appropriate clothing/footwear will not be allowed to participate.
The event will conclude with a Hatchet-themed cake and trick-or-treat candy.
If you have any questions, or would like to make a donation of candy or commercially-purchased food for the event, please send the items to school by Oct. 27 or call me at 704-736-4766 ex. 14121.
